As of 2024, the Char Dham Yatra Starts on 10 May 2024 and ends on 26th October 2024.

Every year, Kedar-Badri Mandir Samiti announces the exact dates of opening and closing for the Char Dham Yatra on the auspicious day of Maha Shivratri. The dates are decided after considering ‘Panchang,’ the holy Hindu calendar. The gates of the four sacred Char Dham are open only for six months every year, beginning from April/May and closing in October/November before the heavy snowfall cuts connectivity to temples.

1. Kedarnath Temple : Opening & Closing Dates

Kedarnath is a major shrine and an important part of the Chardham yatra. The temple’s area is filled with serenity, positive energy, and beautiful scenery. Kedarnath temple’s opening date and time are disclosed on ‘Akshay Tritya,’ celebrated on Maha Shiva Ratri. After calculating Panchang, the priests of Ukhimath’s Omkareshwar Temple decide when the Kedarnath temple will open. For this year, the holy Kedarnath temple’s doors will open in the morning of 10 May with a special Pooja ceremony in the temple. 

After Gudi Padwa and Akshay Tritiya, Lord Shiva’s holy shrine is relocated from Kedarkhand to Ukhimath and reinstalled in Kedarnath. And the Kedarnath temple’s closing date is set on the eve of Bhai Dhooj i.e., 14 November 2024.

2. Badrinath Temple : Opening & Closing Dates

Badrinath Temple is one of India’s holiest shrines and a part of the sacred Chardham Yatra. The supreme temple of Lord Badrinath will be open to the public on 12 May 2024. The date for the opening is set on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchmi at Raj Darbar, followed by the ritual Gadu Ghada, sending an oil-filled pitcher to the temple ahead of its opening. Lord Badrinath will embark on his journey on 8th May. The closing date of the Badrinath temple will be declared on the occasion of Vijay Dashmi.

3. Gangotri Temple : Opening & Closing Dates

Another prominent shrine in the Chardham Yatra pilgrimage, the Gangotri temple, opens on 22 April 2023 on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. A special Ganges Puja precedes the temple’s opening performed both inside the temple and on the river bank. And the Gangotri temple is closed a day after Deepawali. It is believed that the Goddess spends her winters in Mukhwa, a nearby village, where all the rituals and pooja ceremonies occur. However, the tentative closing date this year for Gangotri Temple is 13th November 2023.

4. Yamunotri Temple : Opening & Closing Dates

The extraordinary pilgrimage of Char Dham Yatra begins with Yamunotri Dham, as Char Dham Yatra is preferred to be done clockwise from west to east. Yamunotri Dham’s opening date is 22 April 2023, on the third lunar day of Baisakh month, i.,e Akshay Tritiya. And the sacred Yamunotri Dham will be closed on the auspicious occasion of Bhai dooj, i.e., 14 November 2023, for the next six months of winter. So, Goddess Yamuna is taken to Kharsali to be worshipped during the winters.
